Every quarter the withdrawals get a little harder, the portfolio gets a little smaller, and the income gets a little thinner. Predictable. Comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>It works beautifully\u2026 <strong>as long as markets keep rising.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But markets don\u2019t rise in straight lines.<\/p>\n<p>When the market is flat \u2014 or worse, down \u2014 that same monthly check still goes out.<\/p>\n<p>The difference?<\/p>\n<p>Now it isn\u2019t coming from growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It\u2019s coming from <strong>principal<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That is the core problem.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Quiet Erosion<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you need $4,000 a month.<\/p>\n<p>If the portfolio earns more than that? Fine.<\/p>\n<p>If it doesn\u2019t? No phone call comes saying, \u201c<em>We should adjust the income strategy.<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Because the system is designed for <strong>asset management<\/strong>, NOT income engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the bug!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Longevity has been mistaken for competence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Real Question Retirees Should Be Asking<\/h2>\n<p>On the podcast, I said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>&#8220;<em>Be the house, not the gambler.<\/em>&#8220;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This matters more in retirement than anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>Most retirees are unknowingly gamblers \u2014 not because they\u2019re reckless, but because they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Dependent on market direction<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Selling assets to generate cash<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Hoping markets cooperate<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The house doesn\u2019t hope.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The house structures cash flow.<\/p>\n<p>Retirement portfolios shouldn\u2019t depend on markets rising every year.<br \/>\nThey should generate income whether markets are up, flat, or slightly down.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the shift.<\/p>\n<p>Not chasing performance.<br \/>\nNot swinging for big returns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just restructuring the machine so it produces cash without dismantling itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>This keeps the focus where it belongs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>The mechanical flaw.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The emotional vulnerability (widows).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The outdated model.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The structural alternative<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Simple Fix: Stop Selling Assets. Start Selling Access.<\/h2>\n<p>If you want a portfolio to last, you need more cash flow coming <strong>from the portfolio<\/strong> so withdrawals don\u2019t require you to sell your principal.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where options come in \u2014 NOT as gambling, but as <strong>getting paid for stocks you already own.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Options are just contracts. Like insurance. Like a warranty. Like a deposit.<\/p>\n<p>Used conservatively, they do one thing beautifully:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>They turn your portfolio from \u201c<em>assets you sell<\/em>\u201d into \u201c<em>assets you are paid to keep.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Options Without the Casino: Two Basic Tools<\/h2>\n<h3>1) Selling a Put (Getting Paid to Place a Limit Buy Order)<\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>put<\/strong> is a contract where you agree:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201c<em>If the stock drops to $___ by a certain date, I\u2019ll buy it.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You get paid upfront for making that promise.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s like putting in a limit order\u2026 except <strong>they pay you to place it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Why retirees should like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>You pick prices you\u2019d be happy owning.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>You collect cash now.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>If the stock never drops to your price, you keep the cash and move on.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s not betting on a stock going up tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s getting paid to be patient.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Real-Life example #1: Stellantis (STLA)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the podcast, we discussed Stellantis, which is Alpha Romeo, Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati&#8230; A major auto maker. They just had some bad news and wrote off a lot of their EV investment but we feel they are oversold at $7.75.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/021526\/STLAd085240179i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rather than buy the stock, <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">we can PROMISE to buy 1,000 shares of the stock by SELLING 2028 $10 puts for $3.20 ($3,200)<\/span><\/strong>. The put seller PAYS us $3,200 NOW in exchange for us promising to buy 1,000 shares of STLA from them in January of 2028.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The beauty of this is that, even if we do end up being forced to buy 1,000 shares in 2028, our net cost will be $6.80 &#8211; 12% below the current price! If, on the other hand, STLA is above $10 &#8211; we keep the $3,200 and we don&#8217;t even have to buy the stock &#8211; <strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">that&#8217;s a 41% potential return against the current stock price<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; <strong>WITHOUT EVEN OWNING IT!<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>2) Selling a Call (Getting Paid to Agree to Sell at a Higher Price)<\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>call<\/strong> is a contract where you agree:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>\u201c<em>If the stock rises to $___ by a certain date, I\u2019ll sell it at that price<\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You get paid upfront for that promise too.<\/p>\n<p>This is the simple covered call idea:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>You own a stock you\u2019re comfortable holding.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>You sell a call above today\u2019s price.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>You collect cash (income) while you wait.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the stock doesn\u2019t go above your sell price: you keep the stock <strong>and<\/strong> the cash.<br \/>\nIf it does: you sell at a profit <strong>and<\/strong> you keep the cash.<\/p>\n<p>This is not \u201c<em>free money.<\/em>\u201d Nothing is.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a trade: you accept a <em>reasonable<\/em> cap on upside in exchange for <strong>reliable income<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Retirees generally don\u2019t need a 10x moonshot. They need a check that clears!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An example here would be <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">if you bought 1,000 shares of STLA for $7.75 ($7,750) and you sold the June $7 calls for $1.50 ($1,500)<\/span><\/strong>. That reduces your net to $6,250 and, if STLA is still above $7 ($7.75 now) on June 18th (expiration day), the person you sold the calls to will pay you an additional $7,000 for the stock, which would be a total of $8,500 for <strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">a potential $750 (10%) profit in just 4 months<\/span><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Another fun one is GEO, who build the prisons for the non-whites and liberals President Trump is rounding up. While morally reprehensible &#8211; there&#8217;s a lot of money in those Government contracts and $14.25 is crazy low for GEO so <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">we can buy 1,000 share ($14,250) and sell 10 June $14 calls for $2.25 ($2,250)<\/span><\/strong> and net into the stock for $12,000 and, if called away at $14,000 in June, that will be <strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">a potential $2,000 (16.66%) profit or about 4.15% PER MONTH<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; how&#8217;s that for an income?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/021526\/GEOd090866801i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>And, keep in mind, this is not a one-time thing. Either the stock goes up and we use the cash to do it again or the stock is flat and we simply sell more short calls for the next cycle or the stock is down and we already have 16% downside protection built into the trade!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Add Dividends, and You\u2019ve Got a Paycheck Stack<\/h2>\n<p>Now combine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Dividends<\/strong> (company pays you)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Put-selling income<\/strong> (you get paid to buy at a discount)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Call-selling income<\/strong> (you get paid to set a sell price)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And suddenly you\u2019re not forced to sell principal every month.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, withdrawals can come from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>dividends<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>option premium<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>and occasionally trimming positions <em>on your terms<\/em>, not the market\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s the key shift:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Withdraw<\/strong> income<strong> first. Touch principal last.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this section, let&#8217;s look at AT&amp;T (T), who are currently trading at $28.69 and they pay an 0.28 (1%) quarterly dividend. We can use the options strategies we just learned to drastically improve those returns (and you can do this with almost any stock you already own!):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Buy 500 shares of T for $28.69 ($14,345)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Sell 5 T Jan $27 calls for $3.55 ($1,775)<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Sell 5 T Jan $27 puts for $1.95 ($975)\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In this case, you have bought 500 shares of T for net $11,595 <\/strong>($23.19\/share)<strong> which now makes the 0.28 dividend 1.2% per quarter <\/strong>($140)<strong> but ALSO, if T is over $27 in Jan of 2027, you will be paid back $13,500 for <span style=\"color: #339966;\">a potential $1,905 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">(16.4%) <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">profit for the year<\/span> &#8211; over 20% back on T &#8211; even if it drops $1.75 <\/strong>(6%)<strong> from where it is now!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Feel free to leave us a comment and we can help you with ideas that can turn almost any stock you currently own into an income-producer that will help you build back your portfolio.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Ethical Truth About \u201c<em>Evil Options<\/em>\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Options aren\u2019t evil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using them to gamble is evil <\/strong>(for your retirement)<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What we do is closer to what insurance companies do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>We price risk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>We sell contracts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>We collect small, consistent income.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>We avoid blowing ourselves up.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201c<em>Be the House &#8211; NOT the gambler<\/em>\u201d is not a slogan. <strong>It is a retirement survival plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Where This Series Is Going<\/h2>\n<p>Each month in \u201c<em>Retirement Strategies 101,<\/em>\u201d we\u2019ll do three things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Identify <strong>conservative income candidates<\/strong> (boring is beautiful).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Show a simple \u201c<em>retirement-safe<\/em>\u201d structure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>dividend + put sale + covered call (when appropriate)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Update what we\u2019d adjust based on price and conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>No hype.
