world shifts toward renewable energy sources, some experts warn that a lack of planning for the retirement of fossil fuels could lead to a disorderly and dangerous collapse of existing systems that could prolong the transition to green energy.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aea0972\">study<\/a>\u00a0published in the journal Science, University of Notre Dame researchers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/keough.nd.edu\/about\/faculty-staff-directory\/emily-grubert\/\">Emily Grubert<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pulte.nd.edu\/people\/staff\/josh-lappen\/\">Joshua Lappen<\/a>\u00a0argue that fossil fuel systems might be far more fragile than current energy models assume.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSystems designed to be large and growing behave differently when they shrink,\u201d said Grubert, associate professor of sustainable energy policy at Notre Dame\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/keough.nd.edu\/\">Keough School of Global Affairs<\/a>\u00a0and a faculty affiliate of the Keough School\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pulte.nd.edu\/\">Pulte Institute for Global
