{"id":12760244,"date":"2024-12-17T08:21:32","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T13:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/?p=12760244"},"modified":"2024-12-21T19:54:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-22T00:54:11","slug":"philstockworld-december-portfolio-review-members-only-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/2024\/12\/17\/philstockworld-december-portfolio-review-members-only-3\/","title":{"rendered":"PhilStockWorld December Portfolio Review (Members Only)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/media.tenor.com\/6PFS7ABeJGEAAAAC\/dr-evil-one-billion-dollars.gif\" alt=\"One Million Dollars GIFs | Tenor\" width=\"321\" height=\"134\" \/><strong>2024 is over already?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I must be getting old because this year simply flew by and what a year it has been with the markets performing great &#8211; but nowhere near as great as our 6 Member Portfolios, which have had EPIC years, after being restarted 18 months ago (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/2023\/05\/17\/philstockworld-may-portfolio-review-starting-a-new-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May of 2023<\/a>), when we cashed out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/2023\/04\/18\/philstockworld-april-portfolio-review-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our last batch of EPIC portfolios<\/a>, which we had started on Oct 1st of 2019. The STP\/LTP paired portfolios hit $7,686,573 on April 18, 2023 and we decided it was too good to risk so we started again with a fresh $700,000 and, already, we&#8217;re back over $3M &#8211; crazy!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hopefully you put that other $6.9M into Bitcoin, which was $29,268 at the time but really, it&#8217;s &#8220;<em>only<\/em>&#8221; up 200% since then and our new STP\/LTP is doing better than that in the same 18 months. It was S&amp;P 4,200 when we started our new series and now it&#8217;s almost 6,200 and that&#8217;s up 47% while the Nasdaq has arisen from 14,000 to 22,400, which is up 60% and the rest is good old-fashioned options leverage we&#8217;ve taken advantage of in our portfolios.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12760245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1251\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024.jpg 1251w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024-300x92.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024-1024x315.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024-768x236.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024-150x46.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024-696x214.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/SPX-Dec-17-2024-1068x329.jpg 1068w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1251px) 100vw, 1251px\" \/> We actually could have done better if we didn&#8217;t hedge but, then again, if we didn&#8217;t hedge &#8211; we would not have felt comfortable taking the long-side risks that brought us to this point &#8211; would we? If we didn&#8217;t hedge, I would certainly be calling for us now to take the money and run but we&#8217;re well-hedged for a 20% drop in our Short-Term Portfolio (STP) &#8211; so we&#8217;re not expecting to get caught by surprise and, to some extent, these recent gains are also a hedge &#8211; though it&#8217;s hard to think of them that way, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As I said on April 18th, 2023, when we re-embarked on this journey:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>\u201cI know it seems like we have amazing timing with our entries but that\u2019s because we don\u2019t try to time them at all.\u00a0 We are VALUE investors so, when a stock gets to a valuation level where I can\u2019t resist it\u00a0<\/strong>(and the macros favor the move)<strong>\u00a0\u2013 then we buy.\u00a0 It has nothing to do with the chart and that\u2019s why our Members are able to be \u201cahead of the curve\u201d so often.\u00a0\u00a0The information we have is like having GPS \u2013 we don\u2019t need to see the road to know where we\u2019re going \u2013 we just need to have faith in the data..<\/strong>.\u201c<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our faith in the data has already brought us far down the road to our next $7.7M (10x &#8211; last time we started with $600,000, so we were way over) and I honestly am very worried about what next year will look like but it doesn&#8217;t look like many traders share my concerns so we&#8217;ll let them fluff up our cushion and try to stay nimble &#8211; for if there is ever a correction.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our different Member Portfolios have different strategies and different investing styles but they all employ stock options &#8211; simply because options are better than stocks and that&#8217;s what we teach our Members at PhilStockWorld. Slow and steady wins the race with this one:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12760247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1313\" height=\"1352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024.jpg 1313w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-291x300.jpg 291w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-994x1024.jpg 994w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-768x791.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-150x154.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-300x309.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-696x717.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MTP-Dec-17-2024-1068x1100.jpg 1068w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1313px) 100vw, 1313px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Up 12.9% is off to a very good start for less than 4 months and, of course, we have all that lovely CASH!!! sitting in reserve &#8211; so we&#8217;d love a good pullback for this portfolio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Short-Term Portfolio (STP) Review:<\/strong> Speaking of pullbacks &#8211; the STP is our hedging portfolio &#8211; we use it to protect the rest in case of a market downturn. It&#8217;s also a very aggressive and opportunist portfolio, using all of our option strategies with frequent adjustments to keep us on top of the market waves as they break this way and that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the main idea of the STP is to hedge our longs, we also hedge our hedges by making plays that make money when the market goes up &#8211; so we don&#8217;t lose everything in a bullish market. If the market goes up and we did not pick particularly bad stocks, then the money we sold the puts for drops into the cash pile for this portfolio. Since these are all positions that we WANT to have in our Long-Term Portfolio &#8211; it&#8217;s actually a low-risk strategy for the STP.<\/li>\n<li>DIS, GNRC, TOL and PHM should all expire worthless next month and we&#8217;re not worried about the net assignment price on DHI, EXPE, GOLD, HUM, LEVI, MMM, NKE, PHM or RTX, which leaves for consideration:\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>MRK &#8211; Like PFE, it&#8217;s amazing how out-of-favor the mega-pharmas have gotten. MRK has 36% margins &#8211; 6% better than the sector and is trading at 10x forward earnings. If it goes any lower &#8211; it will go to the LTP as a full position.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>MRNA &#8211; The incoming Administration is scaring investors out of MRNA though I think they are a fantastic long-term play. Our net entry is just $38 and the stock is at $41.84 so not dire yet but we&#8217;ll watch earnings and outlook closely in January.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>TROX &#8211; They are the low-cost producer of Titanium Dioxide, which is a very important industrial metal. China issues have clouded demand but, long-term, demand growth is inevitable. Our net entry is $11.85 and the stock is at $10.40 so not good so <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">let&#8217;s roll the 20 short Feb $14 puts at $3.60 ($7,200) to 30 Dec $12 puts at $2.80 ($8,400)<\/span><\/strong>. We sold the Febs in Aug and, if we can roll down $2 every 4 months, we&#8217;ll get to net $0 in two years so &#8211; as long as TROX isn&#8217;t bankrupt by then &#8211; I think this is just fine!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/121724\/TROXd084059567i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>SQQQ &#8211; It&#8217;s a 3x inverse ETF to the QQQs and it&#8217;s at $27.70 so, if the Nasdaq drops 20%, SQQQ should go up 60% to $44.32 but we&#8217;ve sold 80 $42 calls and 36 $40 calls so let&#8217;s call the cap $42, which is $17 over our 2027 $25 calls and that would be $374,000. The current net of the spread is $130,140 so we have <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">net $243,860 worth of protection in this spread<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Still, I have to tinker because the SQQQ 2027 $20 calls are only $11 and the 2027 $30 calls are $9 and that&#8217;s $10 for net $2 that&#8217;s $7.70 in the money, which is better than what we have so <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">we&#8217;re going to cash out our 220 2027 $25 calls for $9.93 ($218,350) and we&#8217;re going to buy 600 of the 2027 $20\/30 bull call spreads at net $2 ($120,000)<\/span><\/strong> as they will pay $600,000 at $30 and they are $462,000 in the money &#8211; that&#8217;s a huge improvement over our current spread.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>That leaves us with 36 short 2026 $40 calls I am not worried about but also <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">80 short 2027 $42 calls I am concerned about so let&#8217;s roll those ($58,000) to 150 short March $30 calls at $2.38 ($35,700)<\/span><\/strong> and we&#8217;ll hopefully catch up over time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/121724\/SQQQd084455786i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why we ALWAYS DO OUR MATH! You won&#8217;t know if you have an ideal spread if you don&#8217;t compare it to the other possibilities that are out there and it changes dynamically over time. With SQQQQ very low &#8211; we are able to get a great net price on a bullish spread &#8211; even one that&#8217;s in the money.\u00a0 We also took net $76,050 off the table while doubling our net protection &#8211; that&#8217;s a good day!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>BBY &#8211; What a mess! The Jan puts will go worthless and we&#8217;re not worried about the 2026 $60 puts and that leaves us with 75 2027 $82.50 calls against which we&#8217;ve sold 90 short calls and that&#8217;s because we cashed out our original longs and we&#8217;re expecting a pullback. That&#8217;s very brave and kudos to Phil for having the balls last month but this Phil needs to check his work &#8211; as I&#8217;m older and, hopefully, wiser&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>We were coming into the triangle squeezy thingy on the chart and last earnings were a slight miss and we are between IPhone cycles so sure &#8211; I agree with my logic but I can&#8217;t believe I was so confident last month&#8230; I liked them for the Watch List (if they pulled back) but, when we looked at the STP again on 11\/29, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/2024\/11\/29\/black-friday-market-follies\/#comment-8145428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we adjusted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>No point in second-guessing myself two weeks later as I don&#8217;t have a good reason to and I&#8217;m generally pretty good at these things so I&#8217;m going to trust myself and wait for next earnings (or Retail data that gives us more information).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/121724\/BBYd090139381i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>CPER &#8211; That&#8217;s a new one and on track so far.<\/li>\n<li>F &#8211; Getting worse but stupidly cheap so I want to see earnings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>IMAX &#8211; <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I don&#8217;t see the point in waiting until March for the last $2,750 so let&#8217;s cash out the bull call spread and leave the short puts to go worthless<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/121724\/IMAXd091121412i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>SKX &#8211; On track.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>TZA &#8211; This became our primary hedge in November as we decided the Russell was likely to be weaker than the Nasdaq. Our longs are 1,200 $10s and TZA is at $11.10 and 1.6 x $11.10 is $17.76 so $7.76 above our $10 longs is $931,200 and, currently, the net of the spread is $319,650 so we have net <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">$611,550 worth of downside protection<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 The short Jan $22s will go worthless and the April $12s are $1.37 so, if we sell 200 of those it&#8217;s $27,400.<\/li>\n<li>Now, the short 2026 $45s are $1.44 but not worth buying back as they are so far out of the money it&#8217;s a waste. <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The 250 short 2026 $30s are 0.99, which actually makes no sense and that&#8217;s the kind of silliness we like to take advantage of so let&#8217;s buy them back ($24,750) and sell 400 of the April $12s for $1.37 ($54,800)<\/span><\/strong> as they will expire much faster and we can sell 2 more sets ($109,600) rather than wait a year to make $24,750. See &#8211; math!\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/121724\/TZAd091248311i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So we have a solid $1M of downside protection in our Short-Term Portfolio and I feel good about that going into the holidays (and the inauguration). Next we&#8217;ll take a look at how good we feel about our long portfolios&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212; Thursday &#8212;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Butterfly Portfolio Review:<\/strong> What a difference a dip makes. We had been falling behind as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philstockworld.com\/2024\/11\/12\/philstockworld-november-portfolio-review-members-only-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">we aggressively sold short calls last month to protect our gains<\/a> but, now that the market has taken a little dip, we&#8217;re up to $717,640, which is <strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">an $18,212 gain for the month<\/span><\/strong> AND we just had a really good test of how we hold up against a 5% dip in the market (well!).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite being up 258.8% in 19 months, the Butterfly Portfolio is very conservative and strictly adheres to our &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w5WVljziKj4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Be the House &#8211; NOT the Gambler<\/a>&#8221; strategy that drives our trading at PSW. That is why our Butterfly Portfolio is our most consistent earner &#8211; we make money using MATH &#8211; not by hoping the market moves one way or the other&#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In fact, that video is 11 years old and we STILL play RIG (our example trade) and, last month, we sold $3,600 worth of May $4 calls. We are like surfers riding the waves and adjusting our positions to keep them aimed at our goal. There was a takeover offer at $18.43 from CMB.NV and CMBT paid out special dividends of $4.57 on May 22nd and $1.15 on July 9th and the shareholders voted NOT to sell and that disappointed a lot of traders.\u00a0 $9.32 is $1.8Bn and they should make $230M next year so 7.8x is fine by me with only $500M in debt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I guess we can take advantage here by buying back the short calls ($750), doubling down on the stock (2,000 shares for + $9,320) and selling 20 2027 $10 calls for $3 ($6,000) and 20 2027 $12.50 puts for $4.25 ($8,500) and that will be a net $1,430 credit and now we have 2,000 shares at net net ($6,960)<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; not even counting dividends we&#8217;ve collected and that&#8217;s just $3.48 per share or $7.99\/share if we&#8217;re assigned 2,000 more &#8211; I hope that happens, actually!\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aren&#8217;t options fun?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/122024\/CMBTd101732319i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let that sink in &#8211; we bought the stock for $16.14 and now it&#8217;s $9.25 but our net is just $3.48 from all the options we sold and we risk owning more at $12.50 but, if we hit our target &#8211; we are called away with a $9.02 (259%) profit in two years &#8211; PLUS the dividends!\u00a0 Fun!!!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>CROX &#8211; We got very aggressive last month and it&#8217;s already paying off despite the market pullback &#8211; the joy of value investing. They sold their residential mortgage service unit for $1.3Bn, so they&#8217;ll never make the money they used to but by 2026 they should be back around 10x, so I do still like them long-term.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Same trick at CMBT &#8211; we buy back the short puts and calls ($5,680) and double down on the stock ($18,180) and now we sell 40 2027 $10 calls for $2.60 ($10,400) and 20 2027 $12 puts for $4.50 ($9,000)<\/span><\/strong> and that&#8217;s net $4,460 spent on top of our net $17,720 original spend is net net $22,180 for 4,000 shares is $5.545\/share which is almost half the current price DESPITE the fact that we came in at $14.25 &#8211; FUN!!!\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/122024\/FLGd104287712i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a very important strategy called &#8220;<em>scaling in<\/em>&#8221; where we keep plenty of sideline money to double down on stocks that sell off for dumb reasons. This was a $150,000 portfolio with $300,000 of ordinary buying power so we split that into 10 allocation blocks of $30,000 so our initial $17,720 outlay left us plenty of room to double down and, as noted, we only spent $4,460 more and now the portfolio is $500,000 with $1M of buying power and that&#8217;s 20 blocks of $50,000 &#8211; PLENTY of room to run and you can see how easily we can chop down our basis.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>INTC &#8211; We added 50 2027 $22\/30 bull call spreads last month and we also have 50 long Dec 2026 $20 calls covering a bunch of out of the money short calls and some short puts I&#8217;m not worried about.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This spread has huge potential<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/122024\/INTCd105882894i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>JACK &#8211; Down 20% from last month, which should teach us not to be too fast to count our winnings.\u00a0 Easy go, easy come &#8211; hopefully and the Dec calls are going worthless for a $6,000 gain and the short March calls are on track but <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>let&#8217;s take advantage of the dip and roll our 25 March $35 calls at $7.55 ($18,875) to 50 Oct $30 ($13.30)\/45 ($6) bull call spreads at net $7.30 ($36,500)<\/strong><\/span> and those will pay $75,000 if things go well and also gives us 7 more months to sell premium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/publish.finviz.com\/122024\/JACKd114166069i.png\" alt=\"Finviz Chart\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So we spent net $17,625 (which we expect to get back from short call sales) to push our longs $25,000 deeper into the money while doubling our spread<\/strong> (also doubling the amount of short calls we can sell).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>KO &#8211; Right on track.<\/li>\n<li>PFE &#8211; Also with the new bull call spread &#8211; 100 2027 $20\/27 spreads and boy are we glad we bought those last month!
